The end of season driver poll on Updatef1 is prone to throw up a few surprises, and the 2008 result is no surprise. In the top ten are some names that many would not have considered – and in first place one that may surprise – proving that we at UpdateF1 are an eclectic bunch not given to being swayed by result alone. Have a look at the top ten:
1st – Sebastian Vettel
2nd – Lewis Hamilton
3rd – Felipe Massa
4th – Fernando Alonso
5th – Robert Kubica
6th – Nico Rosberg
7th – Kimi Raikkonen
8th – Mark Webber
9th – Nick Heidfeld
10th – Jarno Trulli
I’m sure you will agree that is not the list that you would have predicted! Particularly interesting is that Vettel was a runaway winner, with Hamilton and Massa separated by a mere two points in the next two positions.
It is perhaps no surprise to see Alonso and Kubica figure in the top five given their excellent seasons, yet Rosberg in sixth is maybe the biggest surprise of all. Perhaps we just like the guy, or is it the girls voting for the young blonde multi-lingual German?
Kimi Raikkonens fall from grace has been spectacular, and Mark Webber figures in similar mode to that he has in past years, while veteran duo Heidfeld and Trulli shore up the top ten.
Further interest can be drawn from joint 11th place which went to Heikki Kovalainen – probably deservedly – and Adrian Sutil, whose positioning is as much a surprise as Rosbergs.
No points were scored by the following race drivers: Piquet, Bourdais, Button, Nakajima and Barrichello – the latter signifying that this has been a poor turn out for the UpdateF1 crew, as Rubens usually scores very highly in the lists of a handful of notably absent entries.
In addition, Nico Hulkenberg – the Williams test driver – figured in 13th by virtue of one score.
Well that’s it for the year, and I would like to take this opportunity to than every one of you for your continued presence at UpdateF1, and please look out for some features over the winter months as we look forward to the new season.
