Stars of Tomorrow 2012
Part 2

8. Ramón Piñeiro

Where is he from?

Ramón Piñeiro is twenty years old and was born on 29 October 1991 in Barcelona, Spain

Career History

2008: Formula BMW Europe, 20th
2009: Formula BMW Europe, 19th
2009: Formula Palmer Audi, 20th
2010: Formula Palmer Audi, 3rd with four wins
2010: Formula Two, two races, 22nd
2011: Formula Two, 3rd with three wins

His current career statistics are: 78 starts. seven wins, five pole positions, five fastest laps.

My Prediction for the Future

Ramon was a late call up to this list as another driver moved away from single seat cars. His early career initially put me off including him after disappointing in Formula BMW in 2008 and 2009 but since his move to Formula Two he has improved race on race and a late season charge in last year saw him into third place and earn him a FIA Super licence.

If he stays in Formula Two in 2012 with his level of improvement he should be champion as other drivers will need time to adjust to the cars before they can rival him in the second half of the season. Once he is champion he will get a Williams Formula One test driver at the Rookie Driver test at the end of the season, and depending on sponsorship could be in line for a race seat with the team in 2013. Unless he is offered a GP2 drive, this would be his best course of action as a move to GP3 or Formula Three will be a step down.

7. Stoffel Vandoorne

Where is he from?

Stoffel Vandoorne was born in Kortrijk in Belgium on 26 March 1992.

Career History

2010: Formula Four Euro Cup 1.6, six wins, CHAMPION
2011: Formula Renault Euro Cup, 5th
2011: Formula Renault North European Cup, 3rd

His current career statistics are: 46 starts. six wins, seven pole positions, four fastest laps.

My Prediction for the Future

On 28 November he tested in World Series by Renault for the KPM team and recorded the twenty first fastest time.

He has spent his entire career so far running in Formula Renault cars, so a move World Series by Renault in 2012 is more likely than Formula Three or GP3. KPM are not the top team in the series but a solid season will set him up for a strong drive with a top team in 2013 for a potential title push, giving him two potential chances to earn a test in a Lotus Renault Formula One car following the path taken by others.
