Former Prost Grand Prix Team Principal Alain Prost has called for change in the attitude of officials and their views of the sport, in the wake of a walk-over 2002 season for Italian giants Ferrari.
Four-time World Champion himself, Prost's Grand Prix outfit went into receivership back in January of this year after failing to generate enough revenue to cover their spiralling debts. It has given the ex-McLaren star time to view Formula 1 from a distance.
"Formula One is currently living in a narrow-minded way which doesn't take into account the world economic situation and particularly sponsors," said Prost.
"Changes are needed beginning with a drop in costs and more importance given to the driver."
Costs in Formula 1 have seen the rapid decline of another seemingly stable outfit - Arrows Grand Prix. They missed half of the 2002 season with increasing debts mounting, and their absence from the current 2003 entry list almost cetainly means they will follow Prost Grand Prix's fate.
Prost's opinions reflect the sudden lack of effort and skill needed by modern Grand Prix drivers. Although their part is an important ones, recent technological innovations such as traction control, launch control, and an automatic gearbox, realistically a driver is given only the braking and steering of the car to contemplate.
Prost is to return to racing in the North American Championship.
