The Briton takes P1 in second practice

Jenson Button put the team rift behind him to emerge fastest from this morning’s final practice ahead of qualifying, by clocking a 1MIN 19.556 in the dying seconds of the session.

The young Briton completed 15 laps and finished a mere 0.191 ahead of Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher; the German setting his fastest time of the weekend thus far at the tail end of the 45-minutes.

With the track temperature on the rise and conditions improving, Rubens Barrichello was on par with his team-mate and managed to set a 1MIN 19.768 despite completing just 10 laps. The Brazilian finished just over a tenth ahead of fellow countryman, Antonio Pizzonia, who was, in fact, the first man to lap under the 1MIN 20 bracket.

A good run for Renault, with Trulli and Alonso taking fifth and sixth respectively. Takuma Sato, who failed to set a time in this morning’s previous session, completed 20 laps and finished seventh, with a 1MIN 20.363. The Japanese driver finished just ahead of Juan-Pablo Montoya in the second Williams.

Ricardo Zonta put in a good time for his Toyota team, ending the session in ninth place and just one second off the pace. He finished ahead of Kimi Raikkonen’s McLaren and team-mate, Olivier Panis, who was a further three-tenths down. David Coulthard, meanwhile, set a 1MIN 20.914 to take 12th.

Mark Webber completed 24 laps in the R5 to take 13th spot, finishing ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella in the Sauber and team-mate, Christian Klien. Jordan’s Nick Heidfeld managed 14 laps, setting a best time of 1MIN 21.712 - good enough for 16th.

Felipe Massa went off the circuit in the early stages of the session bringing out the yellow flags, and thus only managed to complete four laps, finishing in 17th and 2.4 seconds off the pace. He finished ahead of Pantano in the second EJ14.

Bruni and Baumgartner bring up the rear some 4.5 seconds off the pace, with all eyes now firmly locked to this afternoon’s qualifying.
