On the 16th anniversary of Enzo’s Ferrari death, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello secured an all-Ferrari front row for tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
Although rain threatened the dying minutes of the session, Michael Schumacher, who took to the track second from last, set a blistering time of 1MIN 19.146. Although Barrichello was faster than his team-mate through the first sector, the Brazilian failed to capitalise on his early advantage, eventually clocking a 1MIN 19.323 - 0.177 off the pace.
The duo are obviously pleased with their performance, Michael Schumacher admitting that the team worked hard in preparation for this event during their testing session at Jerez. “We obviously worked very hard for this result - a great effort from everyone,” he commented.
Barrichello said of his qualifying lap: “It was altogether a good lap, so it’s a little disappointing not to get it [pole]. Everything was really quite smooth, but I missed a little bit towards the end of the lap.”
Takuma Sato outpaced his team-mate to take third position on the grid, just under half a second slower than Schumacher. Button, meanwhile, was unhappy with his lap - a 1MIN 19.700 - and admitted that there was more time available from his BAR006.
“It wasn’t really a great lap - I’d be surprised if we’re in the top five, to be honest. [I] am a little but disappointed; there was a few more tenths left in the car,” he said.
As expected, Fernando Alonso was on impressive form at the circuit he earned pole position on last year, and the Spaniard will start the race from fifth place, albeit some eight-tenths down on Schumacher’s time.
Antonio Pizzonia maintained his weekend form to take sixth on the grid, out-pacing Juan-Pablo Montoya who, by clocking a 1MIN 20.199, will start the race in seventh. It was, however, a bittersweet day for Sauber. Although Giancarlo Fisichella will start from eighth - the team’s best performance of the season, Felipe Massa was forced to sit out the session due to a blown engine. He will, therefore, start the race from the back of the grid.
Jarno Trulli finished in ninth spot for Renault, while Raikkonen managed to haul his MP4/19B into the top 10, despite the team opting for the wrong tyre choice this weekend. His team-mate, David Coulthard, could only muster a 1MIN 20.897, which puts him in 12th place, just behind the Jaguar of Mark Webber.
Toyota, although they performed well in earlier sessions, could only manage 13th and 15th with Olivier Panis and Ricardo Zonta respectively. The duo is separated by Christian Klien in the Jaguar, who ended qualifying 1.9 seconds off the pace.
Nick Heidfeld and Giorgio Pantano will start line of stern for Jordan in 16th and 17th, with Baumgartner and Bruni bringing up the rear for Minardi, just over five seconds off the overall pace.
