They are billed as the champions of tomorrow, but on Saturday at Imola Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso both beat the champion of today.
The pair put in memorable performances during the first qualifying session for the San Marino Grand Prix to finish first and second fastest respectively.
Raikkonen, of McLaren, was the man to nab provisional pole with a time of 1:19.886.
Renault’s Fernando Alonso, who had claimed pole at the last two races, took the fight to the finish line but in the end came up three thousandths short with a 1:19.889.
Ferrari’s seven-time champion Michael Schumacher (1:20.260), who had impressively headed the timesheets for a majority of the session despite being only the fifth runner, finished third fastest.
Fourth was Williams’ Mark Webber (1:20.442) ahead of the practice pacesetter in BAR’s Jenson Button (1:20.464).
Toyota’s Jarno Trulli (1:20.492) was fifth, Sauber’s Felipe Massa (1:20.593), arguably one of the most impressive drivers on the day, was sixth.
QUALIFYING SHORTS
* Costly mistake. Giancarlo Fisichella was one of the losers in Saturday’s first qualifying session.
The Renault pilot was on the leading pace before a mistake at the second Rivazza saw him drop almost two seconds.
The Italian finished 15th fastest, his odds of glory on home soil significantly lengthened.
