Renault returned to the top of the Formula One timesheet after Fernando Alonso recorded the fastest time in Saturday's first practice session for the European Grand Prix.
The Spaniard was unchallenged in the day's first run, finishing over half a second quicker than McLaren’s Juan Pablo Montoya with a time of 1:30.615.
Montoya's 1:31.278 was enough to comfortably secure second, his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen coming home third with a 1:31.573.
Fourth fastest was the second Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella, ahead of the two Ferraris, led by Rubens Barrichello, and the two Williams, led by Mark Webber.
The session was a relatively slow affair compared with Friday afternoon’s second run.
Most men were finalising their race set-up and there was little on, or off, track drama.
BAR continued to limit the miles on their cars, Takuma Sato (10th) and Jenson Button (11th) only completed a combined total of 11 laps compared to Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher who himself completed 15.
Jordan’s Narain Karthikeyan was competitive. The Indian ace gave his team a confidence boost finishing 16th fastest, surprisingly ahead of the Sauber’s struggling Jacques Villeneuve.
