Juan Pablo Montoya showed his hunger for results by setting fastest time (1:12.027s) in the opening session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In second place, just shaded by the Colombian McLaren driver, Ricardo Zonta continued his fine friday form for Toyota with 1:12.085.
The session began quietly, McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa setting an earlier bench mark time of 1:12.913 before experiencing a mechanical failure out on the circuit.
It was only in the final quarter of an hour that the runners emerged, with the Renaults of Alonso and Fisichella finishing third and eighth, and the Williams' of Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber, improving on their Canada form, in fourth and ninth.
Ferrari continue to struggle, Michael Schumacher in tenth, just ahead of team mate Rubens Barrichello.
Scott Speed, the American testing for Red Bull Racing, performed respectably again, his time just one and a half seconds off the fastest.
Ominously, the only driver not to record a time was Kimi Raikkonen, the Finn went off at corner 11 ending his morning early.
