(GMM) Ironically, Indianapolis' farcical F1 race might actually have been safer with the other fourteen cars on track.
Water bottles, beer cans and other spectator missiles, directed at the six racers, embodied the fans' boycott fury.
''I was thinking 'I wish I had a microphone to explain the situation','' said Rubens Barrichello, who ran over a bottle and just dodged a full can.
Jordan's Tiago Monteiro, over the moon to finish his ninth ever F1 race on the podium, also saw the flying missiles, then collected by brave marshals.
The Portuguese said: ''In a way I understand, but it could have been dangerous for us.''
Michael Schumacher also exonerated the confused and disappointed crowd. ''It was just a few,'' said the race winner.
''Ok, on the podium, some people booed, but a lot more cheered. I suppose some others had probably already left.''
The world champion denied that Sunday was the darkest day in the history of Formula One.
''I think there was a day in '94 that was much darker,'' Schumacher said, referring to the death of Ayrton Senna in Italy.
