The GP2 series got some technical input from some of the greatest F1 drivers in the history of the sport.
Former French F1 pilots Jacques Laffite and Patrick Tambay along with 1996 World Drivers Champion Damon Hill tested the GP2 Series development car at the Paul Ricard circuit earlier this week.
Laffite was the first to get a shot at the junior formula car and produced some interesting laps at the testing circuit.
“That was something very special,” said the 61-year old. “This car is so fast, it made me feel like a boy again.”
Hill was up next in the testing order. With his protégé Steven Kane watching from the pit wall, the son of two time driver champ Graham Hill drove his first single seater since retiring from F1 in 1999.
“It really is a very good car,” Hill said. “It’s exactly what any young driver needs to prepare him for Formula One.”
Former Ferrari driver Tambay was able to try his luck at the Dallara made car after a lunch break.
Earlier Tuesday morning Tambay woke up pondering if he should go through the test only to find out after the drive that he still had the racer in him.
“I really shouldn’t have come today. I haven’t driven anything like this in 20 years, and I now I just want to start racing again.”
At the French GP weekend the GP2 Series will be offering fans to meet the next stars of Formula 1 with a GP2 open house.
Ticket holders will able to tour the GP2 paddock on Friday and Saturday afternoons between 17:00 and 19:00.
Drivers will also be available for autographs on Saturday morning’s autograph session.
