In a session that saw the return of Antonio Pizzonia to a Williams race seat, in place of the unwell Nick Heidfeld, Kimi Raikkonen continued to stake McLaren's claim to the Italian Grand Prix.
Raikkonen's time of 1:22.415 just edged out that of Michael Schumacher (1:22.550) who gave the 'tifosi' something to shout about in the closing minutes of the session.
Juan Pablo Montoya took third for McLaren (1:22.676) followed by the two Renaults of Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella.
Mark Webber again showed pace in sixth, less than a second off the pace, with the two BAR-Honda's of Takuma Sato and Jenson Button just behind him.
Pizzonia, on his return to a race seat, set 13th fastest, just over a second behind Webber.
