Former World Champion Nigel Mansell fears his weight may be against him when the upcoming Grand Prix Masters series kicks off in South Africa next month!
Mansell, who also won the US CART Championship in 1993, is concentrating on his fitness in order to compete against fellow ex-Champions Alain Prost, Emerson Fittipaldi and Alan Jones who are also due to race in the new series.
Grand Prix Masters is open to drivers over the age of 45, and will see the former stars compete against each other in identical cars bereft of 'driver aids' in a series that begins at Kyalami and is due to take in several further races next year.
"The cars are tough to drive so I am working really hard on my fitness. My plan is to get within seven or eight pounds of the weight I was when I won my titles."
Also signed up for the series are, among others, seasoned campaigners Rene Arnoux and Riccardo Patrese.
