BMW beckons for Wheldon
Deal agreed in principle

(GMM) Dan Wheldon has zipped his lip as speculation bubbles that the 2005 Indy 500 winner will soon be named as BMW's 'Friday' driver for next year.

The 27-year-old Englishman, who is also the new champion of America's premier open-wheeler category (IRL), was earlier linked to Honda and Williams but is believed to have now agreed a deal in principle with the Munich carmaker.

''There's a lot going on right now,'' Wheldon told ITV, ''and I can't say anything.''

He sang a similar tune to British specialist magazine Autosport by saying: ''I've been told I can't say anything.''

Sir Frank Williams' Grove based team, meanwhile, is believed to have still counted Wheldon among candidates to fill the 'Friday' cockpit for next year, as recently as the weekend.

A spokesman said: ''We have not made a decision (and) are not intending to make an announcement ... for several weeks.''
