Team Brazil got off to the perfect start at Eastern Creek Raceway on Friday with Nelson Piquet topping the opening practice session for the A1 Grand Prix of Nations Australia.
Piquet – who had led the championship until a disappointing result in the Portuguese race two weeks ago – dominated the first hour-long run with a time over a second quicker than his nearest rival Salvador Duran of Mexico.
Nicolas Lapierre returned to the wheel of the Team France racer with a large role to fill after Alexandre Premat’s two wins at Estoril.
Lapierre proved competitive in his third place finish to head home highly-rated Swiss pilot Neel Jani.
Other changes in the field included Byran Herta for Team USA, and Michael Devaney for Team Ireland.
Strong winds and light showers rolled over the circuit soon after the chequered flag fell meaning the drivers could face difficult conditions during the afternoon’s second run.
