Alonso win unexpected
Renault predicted Schumacher to triumph

May 14 (GMM) Renault's Pat Symonds has admitted that he expected Michael Schumacher to win the Spanish grand prix of 2006.

The engineering chief at local victor Fernando Alonso's team told 'RTL' that he was not feeling optimistic as the first of 66 laps unfolded at the Catalan track.

He said: ''I thought Michael and Ferrari would have had the speed to win this race.

''But when it counted, we were fast enough.''

Symonds also denied that Alonso's teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella, deliberately held up Schumacher during the race.

''Absolutely not,'' the Englishman said, ''he was at the absolute limit.''

A team statement, meanwhile, referred to 'inconsistent handling' - not tactics - that slowed the Roman's pace.
