May 17 (GMM) The future of the British grand prix is still in serious doubt, according to Sir Jackie Stewart.
The Scot recently relinquished the reigns of Silverstone's owner, the BRDC, to fellow world champion Damon Hill.
But he warns that the recent rejection of a proposal to redevelop the venue in Northamptonshire keeps a lingering 'threat' over the most historic event on the F1 calendar.
''The British motorsport industry will remain (under threat) until we have a public/private sector partnership for the long-term future of Silverstone,'' Stewart said.
Silverstone's current F1 deal runs out in 2009.
He characterised the proposed redevelopment as 'low risk', but developer St. Modwen admitted this week that the plan was 'unlikely' to go ahead.
''If the club does not proceed (with St. Modwen) there will still have to be some commercial and financial alternative,'' Stewart insisted, ''because we are not of sufficient size to develop Silverstone on our own.''
