UpdateSport have learned this evening of the death of Edouard Michelin, boss of the Michelin tyre company, in a boating accident near Brittany, France, this morning.
It was Edouard who, upset by the handling of, and fall-out from, the problems experienced by users of the companies tyres at the 2005 United States Grand Prix, subsequently announced the withdrawal of the French supplier at the end of this season.
Appointed head of the company by his father Francois, Edouard joined the production line at the factory at Clermont Ferrand, working under an assumed name. He subsequently gained experience throughout the company before assuming the top position in 1999.
Great, great nephew of the company founder Andre Michelin, Edouards achievments, alongside bringing the company into Formula One, included a cost-cutting excercise that was responsible for returning Michelin to profitability.
His death comes at a time when the major tyre companies have been invited to tender for the sole supply to F1 from 2008, something Michelin was known to be considering.
