May 29 (GMM) Mark Webber has emerged as a hero of the 2006 Monaco GP.
Although the Australian worried that his podium-worthy performance risked becoming 'invisible' with yet another mechanical failure, his manager Flavio Briatore praised a pace that rivalled even Renault winner Fernando Alonso's.
Briatore, of course, is on the market for a replacement for McLaren-bound Alonso in 2007.
He told Reuters: ''Now, the shares in Mark go up. It's like the stock market. It was down and now it is up again.''
However, 29-year-old Webber's current boss, Sir Frank Williams, wields the real power, as he owns a contract 'option' on the lanky driver's services next year.
Webber, pulling over alongside the barrier after St. Devote, was furious in the moments after his smoky retirement, but Williams' technical director Sam Michael vowed to get to the bottom of exhaust failures that also burned Nico Rosberg's race.
He said: ''We must ensure they are fixed.
''Mark was doing really well and he was in line for a strong second place.''
