The first practice session in Montreal was pretty quiet with only eight drivers to have recorded a time for the majority of the session. Only towards the end did another nine drivers come out and set a time, but throughout the entire session it was Robert Kubica who held top spot.
His time was a 1:16.390 which was a good 1.9 seconds clear of his next rival Anthony Davidson (1:18.306). Wurz followed him with a 1:18.941, and he was followed by the first of the leading drivers: Michael Schumacher with a 1:18.994. The other Ferrari of Felipe Massa didn't fare so well as the Brazilian could only manage a 1:23.179 - 16th.
Both Honda's gave a good showing with Barrichello 5th and Button 6th. Toyota were looking slow to start with Ralf Schumacher in 12th and Jarno Trulli in 17th which was last in this session.
It was an eventful session for Midland. Giorgio Mondini went out early in the session with a small assembly issue and the session ended with Tiago Monteiro clipping the 'Wall of Champions'.
No race driver from Renault, McLaren, Williams, BMW or Red Bull set a time.
