Jul.15 (GMM) Ferrari and Bridgestone won the day in Magny Cours qualifying, but paddock wags expect that a different tale could unfold over 70-laps of Sunday's blistering race.
''That's a good question,'' said Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn.
The conventional view is that while Bridgestone propelled Michael Schumacher - not to mention Felipe Massa and the Toyotas - to prodigious single lap pace, Michelin is the better bet for the actual grand prix.
''Over one lap (the Ferraris) look very fast,'' said Flavio Briatore, whose Michelin-clad Fernando Alonso is third, ''but our tyres are very consistent.
''You have to be quick over 70 laps, not one.
''Tomorrow we want to win.''
Alonso agreed that France is not a repeat of Bridgestone's Indianapolis-like dominance, calling the state of play 'normal' in the French countryside.
As ever in F1, however, track position is king, and pole-sitter Schumacher insisted that he is 'very happy' to also enjoy the company of his young teammate on the front row.
