(GMM) Michael Schumacher's quest to close the 12-point gap to championship rival Fernando Alonso received a boost at the Monza test last week, where Michelin runners found their tyres to be poorly suited to the track.
While Ferrari supplier Bridgestone is understood to have not encountered the same trouble, French marque Michelin had to totally abandon its planned selection for the Italian grand prix as the surprise track resurfacing had rendered its tyres too hard.
The resurfacing, from Curva Grande to the Ascari chicane, led some Michelin runners to complain about a severe lack of grip, particularly in the Lesmos.
David Coulthard told Speed TV: ''The lack of grip was a bit scary in places.
''It seems to have been a pretty random resurfacing, which hardly anyone knew about.''
