Apr.2 (GMM) Renault, F1's reigning world champion team, expects to take a significant step forward in pace this weekend after a disappointing season opener.
In Melbourne, Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen finished a minute and a lap respectively behind Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, sparking reports that the French squad had stumbled in the off-season transition from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres.
But rookie Finn Kovalainen, after his disastrous debut performance, then set the fastest lap of the day at the pre-race Sepang test last Friday.
It should be noted that the quick time was achieved during a low-fuel qualifying-spec run.
It is understood, however, that Renault made a setup breakthrough at the test relating to the R27's use of its tyres, and expects to perform better during the GP event.
"We seem to be moving in the right direction," test engineer Christian Silk confirmed after the session.
