India will host a Grand Prix in 2009, according to the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Suresh Kalmadi.
In a news conference this morning Kalmadi announced:
"We have received a letter in this regard from Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One. The IOA will be the promoter and the first event will be held in 2009."
Funding would come from both Government and private sources, he explained, and the event would likely be held in the New Delhi area.
"We are planning to hold the race around New Delhi and we are looking to identify suitable land for a track.Once we move ahead (put all aspects in place), a regular contract would be signed."
The announcement comes after lengthy speculation, and sees India join Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Valencia in Spain as likely new venues on a proposed 20 race calendar.
