Jun.29 (GMM) Norbert Haug on Friday played down suggestions that Ferrari will necessarily return to dominance at the French grand prix.
F1's Maranello-built cars red-washed the opening day of practice at Magny Cours, while championship leader Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Fernando Alonso dealt with technical faults and off-track moments in their silver McLarens.
"You cannot say that it is all over if we are third or fourth on a single Friday," Mercedes-Benz's competition chief told the German broadcaster Premiere.
Haug added: "We are not totally where we want to be but if I look at our ideal lap times then we are not missing much."
Alonso, however, finished the afternoon session with just the eighth quickest time, notably behind a gaggle of Adrian Newey-penned Toro Rosso and Red Bull cars.
The Spaniard also had two or three spins, but Haug observed: "There were only a few who did not go off the track.
"It is obvious that we have had better Fridays, but to conclude now that it is all going bad for us is completely wrong."
