Hamilton hot on home ground
Silverstone practice one

A slow start on a rather cold morning at Silverstone was soon brushed aside as the home crowds got what they came to see – Lewis Hamilton, fastest of all.

The Englishman in the McLaren traded top spot with Mclaren team mate Fernando Alonso and the Ferrari pairing of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, ultimately pipping the Finn by just over one tenth of a second to head the standings.

Massa, a fraction slower than his team mate, was almost half a second up on Alonso at the end of the session.

These four were in a class of their own, with fifth place man Nico Rosberg –in the Williams – the only other man within a second of Hamilton, and that by the merest fraction.

Next in the order came Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld in the BMW-Saubers, with Alex Wurz having a more promising run than usual to eighth in the second Williams.

Ralf Schumacher finished quicker of the two Toyota’s in ninth – team mate Jarno Trulli finishing 11th – and the remaining top ten position went to Rubens Barrichello in the quicker of the two Honda’s.

Poor showings for Red Bull, who have Mark Webber and David Coulthard languishing at the foot of the order, and a worthy performance from young Adrian Sutil who managed to lap the Spyker quicker than the Toro Rosso of Tonio Liuzzi.

On a weekend dominated by the ongoing espionage saga – look out for Honda to enter the fray very shortly – it was a refreshing change to see some cars on track.

More later, when UpdateSport will bring you full coverage of the second practice session.
