Mclaren top at Jerez
Testing kicks off in Spain and Italy

Mclaren took top spot on the first day of the Jerez test as seven teams – Mclaren, Toyota, Honda, Red Bull, Williams, Renault and Super Aguri – all put in the miles on a hot and dry day in Spain. BMW will join the test tomorrow.

There was not a race driver in sight as all teams fielded test drivers and stand-ins, with Sebastien Buemi making his debut for Red Bull in place of the injured Michael Ammermuller.

De la Rosa covered almost 70 laps in the MP4-22 on his way to a best time of 1:20.111, a clear second ahead of Franck Montagny who ran a similar distance for Toyota.

Most laps of the day went to Kazuki Nakajima, the Japanese running over one hundred laps in the Williams FW29 with a best just three tenths away from Montagny, and a couple of tenths faster than James Rossiter who was out in the Super Aguri SA07.

Christian Klien was back in his regular Honda RA107 following a stint in a Spyker at the last test, and came in fifth on the timesheets, followed Nelson Piquet Jnr in the Renault, and Buemi for Red Bull.

Ferrari and Toro Rosso were scheduled to begin testing at Mugello, in Italy, this morning, where we understand heavy rain interrupted the running.

The tests continue tomorrow at both venues with rumours continuing to insist that Sebastian Vettel will test for Toro Rosso ahead of replacing Scott Speed in Hungary. This has been denied by sources close to the American, however, and no official word is forthcoming as yet.
