Aug.3 (GMM) With even more twists and turns than the sinuous Hungaroring layout, F1's spy saga continued to race ahead on Friday.
The latest twist is that beleaguered former Ferrari chief mechanic Nigel Stepney is even siding against McLaren, by denying that he 'whistle-blew' about the allegedly illegal Melbourne-spec F2007 car.
Ron Dennis' famous letter this week bordered on praising his countryman for the act, but Stepney's lawyer provided a quote attributable to her client to the Italian media.
"It is not true," he reportedly said.
"It was obvious to anyone who works in formula one that something was not right (about Ferrari's car).
"At McLaren, there was no need for a whistle blower."
McLaren-Mercedes' Norbert Haug, meanwhile, defended his team's participation in the tit-for-tat exchange of open letters in recent days.
"The letters on the internet was started by the other side," Mercedes' competition chief told the German broadcaster Premiere.
"It is not as if we enjoy writing letters, it was about clarification. Up to the (World Council) hearing we were totally reserved."
