Hamilton leads second session
Toyota pull surprise

Lewis Hamilton staked his claim for another Grand Prix win as he set about posting the fastest lap in a delayed second practice session at Istanbul Park.

Hamilton was on song from the start and once he hit the head of the leader board he was never headed as team mate Fernando Alonso in the sister McLaren had to settle with a lowly sixth place finish.

The Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen was the closest car to Hamilton in a session which saw a red flag period of 20 minutes due to a loose drain cover at the exit of turn ten.

The sister Ferrari of Felipe Massa was relegated to fifth position by the surprise packet of the session, Toyota. Ralf Schumacher was the fastest of the duo but was only slightly ahead of Jarno Trulli. Hopefully for Toyota and its workers this is a sign of things to come in this half of the season but there is still some scepticism.

The Williams of Nico Rosberg was next to fall in line ahead of former GP2 rival Heikki Kovalainen in the first Renault. Alexander Wurz in the second Williams put in an improved effort to finish the session in tenth.

BMW were the surprise fallers of the day as Robert Kubica brought home the first car in 11th while Nick Heidfeld struggled to finish 13th. Separating the two were veterans David Coulthard in the first Red Bull and Giancarlo Fisichella in the second of the Renault cars.

The two Hondas of Jenson button and Rubens Barrichello ended the session in 14th and 15th respectively only fractions ahead of the Super Aguri Honda of Takuma Sato. The second Super Aguri driven by Davidson finished the session in 18th only two tenths behind Australian Mark Webber in the second of the Red Bull cars.

Vitantonio Liuzzi lead home team mate Sebastian Vettel at Toro Rosso but the improvement of Vettel from session to session would be starting to scare Liuzzi who is already out of his STR drive. Last but not least are the improved Spykers who managed to keep relatively in touch with the Toro Rosso cars. Adrian Sutil lead home Sakon Yamamoto but the Japanese driver showed that he can match the German for speed as they were separated by just two one hundredths.

This sets up a fascinating qualifying session tomorrow all throughout the field and you can get all the action covered right here on UpdateSport.
