Sep.17 (GMM) India is on track to host a grand prix for the first time in 2010 and for nine subsequent years, the promoter said on Monday.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief Suresh Kalmadi told reporters that following his recent visit with Bernie Ecclestone in London, "the first race has been finalised".
The news also follows the visit to Delhi of F1 circuit architect Hermann Tilke, who selected two sites around Delhi that the promoter will now choose from.
Kalmadi also said he returned from London with a circuit contract and a race promotion deal.
"We'll be signing the contract for 2010," he told a news conference. "The month is not finalised but it could be March, the first race, or after the Bahrain grand prix."
It is not, however, known whether the IOA has paid the necessary $30m deposit, as reported earlier this month, for the F1 rights.
But Kalmadi suggested that the September 30 deadline for finalisation of a deal was still in place and in fact has been extended.
