Ralf Schumacher has confirmed that he will leave Toyota at the end of this season, following a long period of speculation that he and the team would part company.
In an announcement on his own web-site, the German explains:
"Having been a Toyota driver in the past three years, I opted for looking for a new challenge."
He went on to add that the partnership did not produce the results he had expected when he joined, with the team having suffered three largely lacklustre seasons:
"I joined Toyota with high expectations. On the one hand, I regarded it as a major and exciting challenge to be involved in the development of a new racing car. On the other hand, I also learned to like the Japanese style of living, during my long stay in Japan before entering Formula One. And I still get on well with the Japanese mentality. But I am waiting for years for a competitive car."
Some poor performances earlier in the season led to speculation that Schumacher may have been dropped mid-year, but once he got the car more to his liking he began to match, and frequently eclipse, team mate Jarno Trulli.
It is not known what his plans are for next season – the statement goes on to say he will not comment on such until after the final race at Interlagos, Brazil – but it is difficult to see how Schumacher may continue in Formula One as most seats are taken and few teams appear to be interested in the multiple race-winner.
Rumours had linked Ralf with a move to Toro Rosso, who have since confirmed both Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais for 2008, and lately he has been talked of in connection with a berth at the Spyker concern, as he has strong connections with the new owners.
Meanwhile, reports continue to insist that Felipe Massa is bound for Toyota, leaving the second Ferrari seat open for Fernando Alonso. Nothing, however, is confirmed, and we are unlikely to have a clearer picture until the season is over.
