Renault in 'Spygate' hearing
French team had Mclaren info

On the day when it has been revealed that inspectors have begun their detailed analysis of the Mclaren MP4-23, the FIA have announced that representatives from the Renault formula one team have been requested to answer charges of espionage in front of the World Motor Sport Council on December the 6th.

The confirmation comes following weeks of speculation, after sources indicated that Mclaren personnel believed Renault had access to information belonging to the Woking team, and echoes the charges brought by the FIA with respect to Mclaren possessing Ferrari information earlier this year.

That charge, of course, resulted in a one hundred million dollar fine for Mclaren, and the removal of the team from the World Constructors Championship.

The full announcement reads as follows:

“Representatives of the Renault F1 Team have been requested to appear before a hearing of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Monaco on Thursday, December 6, 2007.

The team representatives have been called to answer a charge that between September 2006 and October 2007, in breach of Article 151c of the International Sporting Code, the Renault F1 Team had unauthorised possession of documents and confidential information belonging to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, including, but not limited to the layout and critical dimensions of the McLaren F1 car, together with details of the McLaren fuelling system, gear assembly, oil cooling system, hydraulic control system and a novel suspension component used by the 2006 and 2007 McLaren F1 cars.”

If the Mclaren verdict can be taken as a precedent, Renault can expect severe penalties to be imposed.

This comes at a time when the French team are allegedly on the verge of signing Fernando Alonso, recently released from his Mclaren contract, for 2008, and will not be advantageous to the completion of that deal.

We will bring you further news as we receive it.
