Ferrari fly on day one
Red beats silver on damp track

The first days running at Jerez proved a Ferrari benefit, with Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa taking the top two slots once the track dried out in the afternoon.

Third and fifth went to Pedro de la Rosa and Heikki Kovalainen in the McLaren MP4-23, the team opting not to run in the wet morning section, while Toyota were the only other team running a 2008 car, with Jarno Trulli taking the TF108 into eighth fastest time of the day, over a second down on the best from Ferrari. The Ferrari and McLaren, however, have already undergone serious mileage last week, while the Toyota has endured only a shake down prior to this run.

Toro Rosso had appositive day with Sebastian Vettel fourth and Sebastien Bourdais sixth in the Ferrari powered chassis, and Williams ran an interim FW29b – in the first of six commemorative paint jobs intended to celebrate thirty years in the game – with Nico Rosberg running to seventh and Kazuki Nakajima 12th.

Of the remaining runners Nelson Piquet took the Renault R27 to ninth, David Coulthard went tenth in the Red Bull RB3, Tonio Liuzzi managed a promising 11th in the old Spyker/Force India, and the final two places went to Timo Glock in the 2007 Toyota, and James Rossiter in the Super Aguri.

BMW will test the new F1.08 at Valencia today.

Testing continues at Jerez today, and we will bring you news as we have it.
