Toyota used the third day of the Jerez test, another affected badly by rain, to test the potential pace of the TF108, and in the hands of Timo Glock, the red and white car promptly set best time of the day – 1:19.799 – some three tenths of a second faster than Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren MP4-23.
Both men had incidents during the day – Hamilton having two off-track moments and Glock one – while Fernando Alonso continued his successful return to Renault with third best time in the 2007 car.
Sebastien Bourdais impressed again, the CART champion settling in at Toro Rosso nicely with a fourth fastest time just shy of Alonso in the STR2, this considerably faster than team mate Sebastian Vettel who endured the bulk of the teams problems and finished last of all.
Heikki Kovalainen further enhanced his pace with a time just half a second short of Lewis Hamilton for sixth position, and Kamui Kobayashi shaded the Finn by a fraction of a second for seventh in the 2007 Toyota.
Ferrari had a low key day with Felipe Massa fifth and Kimi Raikkonen eighth, although both men professed to be impressed by the potential of the F2008, while Kazuki Nakajima took ninth in the Williams FW29b, just ahead of Adrian Sutil with the Force India/Spyker.
Red Bull rolled out the RB4 for its first run, and although David Coulthard completed over 50 laps before engine failure curtailed his day, he was slower by a few tenths than the time set by Mark Webber in the old RB3. The team were pleased with the pace of the new car on its first appearance.
Nico Hulkenberg ran for Williams and spent a lot of time off the track, while Super Aguri abandoned late plans to test for a third day following complications in the transporting of spare parts.
BMW continued running at Valencia w=but were hampered by strong winds and rain, and will continue today with Nick Heidfeld in the new F1.08 and Marko Asmer in the F1.07.
