The final day of the Valencia test saw a close fight for top spot, with Finnish duo Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen finishing the day a fraction apart in the top two spots.
Ferrari’s man set the benchmark at 1:11.189, with the McLaren driver behind by a mere seventeen one-thousandths of a second.
Half a second behind the front two came Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton a couple of tenths down on him. Splitting these tow was the surprise package of the test – Kazuki Nakajima in the Williams FW30.
The Williams has looked quick all week, and the young Japanese went quicker as the day progressed as he got to grips with the promising machine. His best time shadowed Massa by a tenth of a second.
BMW-Sauber appeared to be getting to grips with the balance problems that have plagued the car this week, with Robert Kubica setting a respectable sixth fastest, while Jarno Trulli put in a last-gasp effort in the Toyota TF108 to go eighth.
Disappointment faced nelson Piquet Jnr, the Brazilian in the Renault outpaced by Giancarlo Fisichella who impressed all with an unrelenting effort in the Force India, while there was further gloom for Red Bull who packed up after Mark Webber had managed to complete only 15 laps.
Of the other runners Toro Rosso came home eighth and 14th, and Jenson Button endured another woeful day at the wheel of an unwieldy Honda RA108.
