Mar.14 (GMM) McLaren test and reserve driver Pedro de la Rosa has been elected chairman of the F1 drivers' union GPDA.
The Grand Prix Drivers' Association met in Melbourne on Friday, and de la Rosa was put forward by his fellow members to replace the departed chairman Ralf Schumacher.
"The guys supported me so I am happy to get the job," the 36-year-old Spaniard said.
De la Rosa said one of his main aims in the role is to recruit as members youngsters like Lewis Hamilton, and world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
"We all have to be part of it because we are working on safety and safety is for everyone," he is quoted as saying by the British news agency Reuters.
The GPDA's other directors are Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber.
Webber told a news conference on Friday afternoon that he also hopes to recruit rookies Nelson Piquet and Timo Glock, and revealed that Sebastien Bourdais has already joined the voluntary body.
"I hope they will get involved, because everyone is benefiting from our work," the Red Bull driver said.
