German automotive components company Weigl, supplier to many of the world’s car manufacturers, is said to be poised to make a bid for the troubled Super Aguri team.
Talks between the team and a group named Magma fell through in recent weeks, leading to Super Aguri making what may have been their last appearance at the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend, unless a suitable investor can be found.
The Weigl stories seem to carry some weight, although we ate Updatef1 are inclined to agree with the sentiments expressed on Grandprix.com, who sensibly question how the organisation – which turns over $200m annually - could possibly afford to invest sufficiently in an F1 team. It is clear, then, that additional backers would be required to make any deal attractive to Super Aguri and to parent company Honda.
Weigl are involved in F1 by way of a technical partnership on the gearbox front with what is now the Force India team.
We await any further development with interest.
