Concerns for driver safety at Istanbul Park must be raised following a bizarre incident in the GP2 sprint race run this morning.
Some way into the race, two stray dogs ran onto the circuit and Bruno Senna could not avoid hitting one. The impact wrecked his car, but thankfully left the driver uninjured, if very annoyed.
At the speeds attained by GP2 cars – let alone F1 cars – impact with an animal such as a dog could have fatal results, and the organisers will have some explaining to do if they are to assure safety at future events.
The race was run under the safety car until the second animal was caught.
The incident is reminiscent of one in Austria in the 1980’s when a McLaren driver collided with a deer during practice, but bears little resemblance to Anthony Davidson’s collision with a groundhog in Canada recently!
