Scott Dixon wins Indy 500
New Zealand takes first win

New Zealander Scott Dixon has won the Indianapolis 500 driving for Target Chip Ganassi racing. He took the lead from Brazilian Vitor Meria in the last round of pit stops with twenty-five laps to go, before holding off a hard charging pair of Meria and Marco Andretti who finished third.

The main attraction in the build up to the race was Danica Patrick, but her race ended in disappointment when he was taken out of the race after a clash with former Toyota Formula One test driver Ryan Briscoe, driving for the Penske team.

Other former Formula One drivers in the field included Minardi and Jaguar driver Justin Wilson, he retired after 132 laps, Jaguar test driver Tomas Scheckter was running in the top four for most of the race before retiring with technical problems after 156 laps. The only former Formula One driver to finish was Arrows driver Enrique Bernoldi, he was fifteenth and the last driver to finish on the lead lap

All British hopes rested on the shoulders of four drivers, as mentioned Wilson retired, Dan Wheldon, Dixon’s team mate, started second on the grid and was one of the favourites for victory but it did not go to plan and he finished twelfth. Darren Manning was the top British driver finishing in ninth place while Alex Lloyd retired after 151 laps.
