Second practice in Canada was thankfully unaffected by rain, giving us 90 minutes of on-track action.
There were interruptions, however, with yellow flags raised when Fernando Alonso and then Timo Glock fell foul of the challenging circuit, and when Felipe Massa and Nelson Piquet stopped on the circuit with mechanical problems.
None of this bothered Lewis Hamilton, the McLaren man leading the field with a fastest lap of 1:15.752 to head next fastest man Robert Kubica by quarter of a second.
Next came Kimi Raikkonen, the Finn losing out by a few thousandths, and his countryman Heikki Kovalainen in the second McLaren a couple of tenths behind him.
Massa finished the session fifth despite missing the last quarter of an hour, and a revitalised Nick Heidfeld will have been heartened with sixth place, the German being the only one of the front runners not to attempt a quick time in the closing stages.
Mark Webber again put in his customary excellent performance and took the Red Bull to seventh, the final runner within a second of Hamilton, with Nico Rosberg a fraction back in eighth in the Williams.
The final top ten runners were Sebastian Vettel in the STR – a great effort from him – and Jarno Trulli in the Toyota.
