We are led to understand an agreement between Bernie Ecclestone and race organisers has been met that will guarantee the presence of the Australian Grand Prix on the Formula One calendar, and at Melbourne, until 2015.
Talks had been on-going for some time, with the sticking point being Ecclestone’s demands that the race become a night fixture in order to accommodate the European fan base – F1’s first night race will take place in Singapore in September this year.
Reports indicate a compromise has been reached with the Melbourne race to start at 5pm local time – later than normal but considered not too late to be disruptive.
Should the deal be confirmed it will be a great relief for the Australian organisers who, like many others, have been threatened by the spectre of big money offers from the likes of India and Russia, among others who wish to secure the prestige of a Grand Prix.
