Felipe Massa took Magny Cours by storm this morning, with a fastest time in the opening practice session some seven-tenths of a second quicker than the next man. It was no one-off, either, as the Brazilian ran a series of laps considerably quicker than his rivals to let it be known he has to be taken seriously this weekend.
Second fastest was Lewis Hamilton, the McLaren driver unable to match Massa’s astonishing pace in the final sector of the lap, with Heikki Kovalainen in the second McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen both within a tenth of a second of Hamilton’s best.
Three-tenths further back – and a full second slower than Massa – came Canadian Grand Prix victor Robert Kubica, the Pole a merest fraction faster than Fernando Alonso.
The next man – Jarno Trulli – was a further three tenths behind, and the top ten rounded off by Sebastian Vettel in the STR, a clearly struggling Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW, and Timo Glock in the second Toyota.
Honda, Red Bull and Williams appeared evenly matched, and a lifetime away from the pace.
