Fernando Alonso sprung a surprise with fastest lap in the second practice session for the French grand prix at Magny Cours, the Spaniard lapping just seven one hundredths of a second faster than Felipe Massa in the Ferrari to secure top spot.
Alonso set the time late in the session, and proceeded on a string of laps in a similar vein thus proving this was no one-lap special for Renault’s home crowd.
Behind Massa came his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, the World Champion a tenth behind Alonso, and a further couple of tenths back came Lewis Hamilton in the quicker of the two McLaren’s.
Another surprise was the presence of Sebastian Vettel, the German in the Toro Rosso, in fifth place, this being another genuine effort as Vettel managed a number of quick laps, while behind him sits Robert Kubica, Formula One’s newest winner.
Heikki Kovalainen and Nick Heidfeld came next in the second McLaren and BMW, and the top ten was finished off by Nelson Piquet in the second Renault and David Coulthard, the veteran Scot in the Red Bull.
At the foot of the table Honda managed only to fight with the two Force India cars for the title of not slowest.
