Alonso tops wet session
Rain interrupts hour

A frantic but inconclusive wet session at Silverstone provided a prelude to qualifying this afternoon, with the promise of more rain likely to put the proverbial cat among the pigeons.

When a dry line – of sorts – eventually emerged between showers it was Fernando Alonso who went quickest in the Renault, his time of 1:20.740 quarter of a second faster than that of Mark Webber, who was always prominent in the Red Bull, as yesterday.

McLaren’s placed third and fifth – Heikki Kovalainen again quicker than Lewis Hamilton – with Sebastian Vettel in between in the STR, again showing the sort of pace he has displayed all weekend. Indeed, his team mate Sebastien Bourdais topped the times on more than one occasion, and wound up a creditable seventh.

Nelson Piquet confirmed Renaults promise with a fine sixth fastest, and the remaining top ten runners were Timo Glock, Kimi Raikkonen and Rubens Barrichello.

Little to draw, then, from the session apart from the obvious pace of the Red Bull and STR machines, and that McLaren appear to be well placed.
