Lewis Hamilton took victory in the German grand Prix at Hockenheim, but not in the manner that may have been expected.
A safety car period, instigated when Timo Glock had a major accident in the Toyota, shook up the order and left Hamilton in the lead from Nick Heidfeld in the BMW, these two having stayed out while the rest pitted under the safety car conditions.
Nelson Piquet, in the Renault, found himself in third place having pitted just before the safety car on a scheduled on stop run, and then in the lead of the race when first Hamilton, and then Heidfeld, stopped around the 50 lap mark.
Hamilton duly picked off Massa in style, then took on Piquet, and regained a lead he held until the end. Piquet held on easily for second place – his best result ion the sport – and Massa managed to hold off Heidfeld to take the final podium slot.
Fifth went to Heikki Kovalainen in the second McLaren, sixth to a decidedly lacklustre Kimi Raikkonen, and the final points to Robert Kubica in the second BMW, and Sebastian Vettel in the STR.
