A remarkable final few minutes of second practice at Valencia threw the order into turmoil as Fernando Alonso came from nowhere to take top spot for Renault, but it wouldn’t be for long as with no time left to respond Kimi Raikkonen produced a blinding effort to put Ferrari back on top with a 1;39.477 lap, just two one-hundredths up on Alonso.
Third, another with a low fuel lap, was Jenson Button in the Honda leading to speculation that there is more time to come from this intriguing track. Behind the Honda came Felipe Massa’s Ferrari, the McLaren’s of Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton, and the last man under the 1:40 barrier was Timo Glock in the Toyota in seventh.
STR failed to live up to the promise of this morning with both cars languishing in the lower quarter of the table and in close company with sister team Red Bull, while Force India raised eyebrows with some impressive runs, the best of which put Giancarlo Fisichella in a fine tenth position.
