The Belgian grand prix took an unexpected and dramatic turn in the last few minutes as the Stewards of the meeting handed Lewis Hamilton a 25 second penalty for cutting the chicane in his last gasp attempt to take the lead from Kimi Raikkonen.
Hamilton gave back the position only to immediately retake the place, but the stewards deemed the offence punishable and levelled a drive through penalty on Hamilton, applied after the race.
The decision means that Hamilton drops to third position in the race results, with Felipe Massa elevated to first position and Nick Heidfeld inheriting third spot.
