McLaren have registered an appeal with the FIA with regard to the 25-second penalty levied on race winner Lewis Hamilton following the Belgian Grand Prix.
A McLaren spokesman explained that they had no option but to appeal, as they have data that shows Hamilton’s car crossed the finish line some 6kmh slower than the then lead Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, citing this as further evidence that Hamilton did not gain an advantage by cutting the chicane.
The stewards accepted that the McLaren driver gained an advantage initially, but maintained that an advantage was still gained by the manoeuvre and levied a penalty that moved the championship leader back to third in the race results.
