EF3: Round 8 - Barcelona
Hulkenberg and Oshima win

Round eight of ten of the Formula Three Euroseries was held in Barcelona, Spain. Nico Hulkenberg leads the championship fro ART with sixty-one points and has a great chance to add to that starting on pole for race one.

He won race one, after passing Yann Clairay of SG when the French driver made a mistake. Hulkenberg’s team-mate Jules Bianchi was taken out of the race by Richard Philippe of SG forcing Hulkenberg to take avoiding action and lose the lead.

Sam Bird finished second for Manor with Christian Vietoris third for Mucke. It was a much needed podium for both drivers who have suffered disappointing seasons after being named on UpdateF1’s Stars of Tomorrow earlier this year.

Clairay dropped to fourth after his mistake, James Jakes was fifth for ART, Dani Clos sixth for Prema, after he spent mid-week testing for the Williams F1 team. Erik Janis was seventh for Mucke, Kazuya Oshima eighth for Manor. Signatures championship contender Edoardo Mortara could only manage ninth with Jon Lancaster rounding out the top ten for ART.

Hulkenberg’s only other championship contender: Mucke driver Mika Maki was running fifth until he stopped with a mechanical problem.

Oshima won race two from pole position. All the action happened behind him as Hulkenberg, Bird and Mortara all had problems.

Hulkenberg hit Bird into the first corner after finishing one and two yesterday, Bird was spun and fell to the back and eventually finished eighteenth while Hulkenberg retired with suspension damage.

Vietoris was second, Bianchi was third despite starting the race in twenty-seventh place. He made the most of the confusion at the start to jump into fifth place before passing Jakes and Clairay who finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Brendon Hartley was sixth on his Formula Three Euroseries debut for Carlin, after being a regular in the British Formula Three series this year. Janis was seventh, Jens Klingmann was eighth for RC with Philippe ninth and Ranger Van Der Zande tenth for Prema.

Despite his non finish in race two, Hulkenberg looks un-catchable at the top of the championship standings, he has seventy-two points and leads Mortara by twenty-four points with only two events remaining. Van Der Zande is third with thirty-seven just one ahead of Vietoris and three ahead of Maki who is now fifth.
