First practice at the magnificent new Singapore street circuit got underway beneath clear skies, and with only Mark Webber in the red Bull and Rubens Barrichello in the Honda coming to grief around the floodlit track.
We will have to wait to hear what driver thought of the light, but it was no surprise to see the McLaren and Ferrari drivers fighting it out for the top spot – particularly Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa, who topped the session in that order just eight one-hundredths of a second apart.
Next came Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen, with the remainder of the top ten a mixture of the two BMWs, both Renault runners, Nico Rosberg in the Williams and the remaining running Honda of Jenson Button.
Out trackside observer reported a lack of grip evident from the way the cars were being manhandled, and a large amount of dust on the circuit, and we will be back for the second 90-minute session with full commentary in a short while.
