The penultimate round of World Series by Renault was held at the Estoril circuit in Portugal. Giedo Van Der Garde driving for P1 Motorsport has dominated the season and the big story around Estoril was weather he could take the title.
He failed in race one as Fabio Carbone took victory for Ultimate Signature after charging from fifth to take victory and to strengthen his place second in the championship. Marcos Martinez finished second for Pons but was given a twenty-five second penalty for an overly aggressive move on Marco Bonanomi causing the Comtec driver to retire.
Alvaro Barba was promoted to second for Prema Powerteam, Robert Wickens was third for Carlin Motorsport, Julien Jousse fourth driving a Tech 1 Racing car, Esterban Guerrieri fifth Ultimate Signature, Marco Barba driving for Draco Racing, Miguel Molina finished seventh for Prema Powerteam, Van Der Garde came home eighth to put one hand on the title. Mikhail Aleshin was ninth for Carlin Motorsport and Felipe Albuquerque rounded out the top ten for Epsilon Euskadi.
Van Der Garde was not going to be denied his title in race two as he secured it and the prized Renault Formula One test drive with another eighth place finish.
Molina won the race from Charles Pic driving for Tech 1 after leading the race in the opening laps.
JOusse brought the other Tech 1 car home third, Bertrand Baguette was fourth for Draco, with Bonanomi recovering from his earlier retirement to take fifth, Guerrieri was sixth, Martinez seventh, Van Der Garde eighth, Albuquerque ninth with Marco Barba completing the top ten.
Earlier winner Carbone retired in race two leaving just two points between himself and Jousse in the battle to finish as vice-champion to Van Der Garde with just one round left in Barcelona, Spain on October 19.
